In summer 2024, I flew to Yunotsu, Shimane Prefecture, to see kagura in the flesh, a form of theater borne out of Shinto ritual that is ancient enough to have been mentioned in the 8th century Nihon Shoki (The Chronicles of Japan) and may even be as old as Japan herself:
